While it is often assumed that full electrification of our energy sources will lead to full decarbonization, there has been little thought on how electricity is currently generated, stored, transmitted, and consumed. Electricity is a delivery method of energy, not an energy source itself.
Cost
Propane is a primary energy source, whereas electricity is secondary. Propane can be used as is and electricity can only be used once it’s been created by another energy source. This means that it takes more energy to create electricity, which can affect its efficiency and cost. In fact, on average propane is 27% less cost and 30% more efficient when compared to electricity.
Clean and Safe
Propane creates far less pollution than the coal burning power plants that supply many of our homes in the US with electricity, which means cleaner air for our communities to breathe.
Water Heaters
Propane water heaters provide more hot water than electric water heaters because they recover 2 ½ times faster and they cost about 30% less to operate. Also, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that propane water heaters save at least $175 annually compared to electric water heaters.
Production
The pollution created from burning propane is far less than that created by the power plants supplying you with electricity, so you help protect the environment by contributing to cleaner, more breathable air.
Heating
Propane gas furnaces provide more heat and comfort with consistent air supply at 115 °F, compared to electric heat pumps that deliver air at a temperature slightly warmer than the outside air and creates a drafty feel in your home.
Cooking
Most cooks prefer cooking with gas. A new propane cooktop or range costs one-third less than cooking with an electric range, delivers faster cooking times, more accurate cooking temperature and distributes heat more evenly.
